This was the first full-length album recorded by Morbid Angel. The recording took place in 1986 and was financed and produced by David Vincent, who was not a member of the band at the time. Guitarist Trey Azagthoth was unhappy with the finished product and the release was shelved. It was finally officially released in 1991 to combat bootlegging.
All songs from the album except for "Demon Seed" have been re-recorded on later albums. Apart from the obvious ones, these songs have received different titles for their re-recorded versions:
"Azagthoth" became "The Ancient Ones"
"Hell Spawn" became "Hellspawn: The Rebirth"
"Welcome To Hell" became "Evil Spells"
